Alleyway

Environment Design

As a part of my graduate course, I was tasked with creating a collection of game assets that could be used to create a game environment. 'The Alley' was created over the course of 10 weeks.

SUMMARY

I started this project as a part of my graduate coursework at Savannah College of Art and Design, it was my first real dive into the whole environment creation process and Unreal Engine workflow.

  • Created blockout to achieve a proper sense of scale.

  • Models were created using 3ds Max.

  • Tileable textures were created using Substance Designer/ Painter.

  •  Imported everything in Unreal to set up materials and lighting.

RESEARCH AND REFERENCES

I first started by gathering all kinds of images and collecting a lot of neat art pieces on the Pinterest board. One thing I also like to do for inspiration is to start games that have similar environments like Yakuza or CyberPunk and walk around admiring the environment, taking screenshots as I go. Once I had some interesting images I went to blocking out the space and feel.

3D Models

As with all of the work I’ve done, this scene had its fair share of barriers that needed overcoming. There were many aspects of the scene that I ended up redoing multiple times, and the scene was definitely far better off for it. A big thanks to my Professor at SCAD and Emiel Sleegers

To improve more and learn about unreal further, I tried expanding the project further into UNREAL 5.

Note: Some of the assets and textures in the above video were kitbashed from Unreal Engine Marketplace and Quixel Megascans
